Exquisite 1830s original oil portrait of distinguished gentleman on canvas in original frame; professionally restored and framed. Sitter is believed to be an offspring of Thomas Rolfe, son of John Rolfe and Pocahontas.
Attributed artist Cephas Giovanni Thompson (1809-1888) He was best known for painting the portrait of his friend and known novelist,Nathaniel Hawthorne, who wrote The Scarlett Letter.
Window on back of painting reveals “prepared by Edward Dechaux New York”, stamp.
Portrait has belonged to the Wardner family since the 1800s.
