Beautiful William Washington Girard oil painting in great condition. 16" height X 30" width. With frame, the measurements are 18" X 32". Washington Girard was a local Tennessee painter descended from one of Nashville's founders, Joseph Durard (whose family later changed their name to Girard) or possible from Timothy Demondreun, because parentage of the Demondreum/Durard children was somewhat in question. Washington Girard is reported to be buried in the Sycamore Creek Church of Christ just off of the Old Clarksville Pike in Cheatham County. He made a career out of painting birch trees and a number of his paintings are in the collection of the TN State Museum. We have here a more rare example of his still-life work with a luscious watermelon surrounded by grapes and a lemon.
