ANSWERS FROM RUSTI GREENE, WHO OPERATES A BOOTH WITH HUSBAND J. TODD GREENE
Q: IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT ANTIQUE OR COLLECTIBLE WOULD YOU BUY RIGHT NOW?
A: For sure more art - folk and the more contemporary masters of course! I love Thorton Dial, Bill Traylor. I am fascinated by Van Gogh, and Todd would kill to have a Basquiat.
Q: WHAT IS THE MOST GORGEOUS ANTIQUE YOU EVER SAW, IN A PRIVATE COLLECTION, OR EVEN A MUSEUM?
A: For me, I have to admit, the Fabergé jewelry and egg collection is unreal. The diamonds, hello!!! So over the top! I cannot help but think about the tumultuous times when these pieces were created. How ironic it must have been with so much poverty, confusion and pressure in the air. But out of the madness, beauty happened.
Q: WHAT SELLS THE BEST IN YOUR BOOTH?
A: Mid-century or vintage furniture that is unique. Art does well -- especially when people find out you can get Todd's art very reasonable prices in our booth. When he sold through galleries, the price was at least 40% higher.
Q: WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING STORY YOU KNOW ABOUT ANY OF THE ANTIQUES YOU HAVE EVER OWNED, OR EVEN A COMPELLING STORY YOU KNOW ABOUT AN ANTIQUE YOU DON’T OWN?
A: There is a collectible antique mantle clock that has been passed down to the oldest child in my family for generations. It's mine now. The story goes that it stopped running at 9:47pm, the exact time that it's owner (my great-grandfather) died of a sudden heart attack. It was his clock and has never been fixed - it still reads 9:47! Kinda creepy.
Q: WHAT ANTIQUE TREND DO YOU LOVE?
A: It's kinda nice that anything goes. Whether you like certain eras or barf because of other ones, the scene is wide open for whatever taste you have. FFFRRREEEDDDOOOMMM!!!
Q: WHAT GENRE OF ANTIQUES DO YOU HAVE AS A COLLECTION? IS THERE A GENRE OF ANTIQUES OR COLLECTIBLES YOU WOULD LIKE TO COLLECT IN THE FUTURE?
A: I'd like to collect more furniture such as Herman Miller, those with Danish smoothness, etc. There is such artistry in these creations. It's the perfect combo of creativity and quality.
Q: WHAT ANTIQUE ERA DO YOU NOT LIKE?
A: Not a fan of HEAVY pieces of furniture, like those that seem to absorb the light.
Q: ARE ANTIQUES A GOOD INVESTMENT? WHY OR WHY NOT?
A: Heck, if you have the money to buy antiques, then you go girl!
Q: HAVE YOU EVER RECYCLED OR UPCYCLED AN ANTIQUE/VINTAGE ITEM?
A: Yep - I think anytime you "rescue" something special from a Goodwill or random yard sale, you have done the ages a favor.
